Wow, if this summary is any indication (and I suspect it is), this sounds like a delight!

I'm glad you recommended this. I enjoyed the story and characters very much. The audio version was terrific. I had previously read and enjoyed her book The Music Shop. But this was in a higher league. Wish I could spend some more time with Miss Benson.

I was intrigued by your referencing "British spinster novels". New to me! Do you have favorities?

Yes! Loved the audio version was terrific. I think you'd like her The Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. As for British spinster novels, try Excellent Women by Barbara Pym. The BEST. XX

Barb--this sounds delightful! Have you read Ronan Hession's Leonard and Hungry Paul? A friend raved about it yesterday.

OMG, YES! "Beg pardon" was hilarious. I listened to it, too. Great reader!

This was also one of my favorite books of 2023. We mustn’t forget Enid Pretty’s use of the phrase “beg pardon?” whenever she was asked a question she didn’t want to answer. I first listened to this as an audiobook. Your review reminded me that I intended to buy a hard copy. Too good to not have one on my bookshelf. Happy New Year!
