I met Merwin once in Chicago at an event he did at the Field Museum - his poem "Odysseus" still gets me each time I read it.
Just looked it up and, wow..."the unravelling patience he was married to."
It's such a beautiful poem - melancholy and powerfully wistful. (I used it when I taught syllabic poems - most of the lines are 9, 10, 11 syllables, if I remember correctly).
It really is. Another one of his that I love is "The Blind Seer of Ambon."
