I am so looking forward to reading this, and there are so many songs that take me places in my life, not least of which is Tweedy's own "Reservations," and the Mysteries of Life's version of "Naive Melody," and Pernice Brothers "Our Time Has Passed," all of which transport me immediately to when I was falling in love with Becky. Thanks, Barb.
This post sums up my feelings completely. Songs are time machines for me. I've had a number of writing teachers mention that aromas or smells are their time machine. That mnemonic has never worked for me because I don't have a great sense of smell and science implies that it may be because I'm a man and it's not unusual for women to have 50% more olfactory neurons than men but if I hear Aretha Franklin's "Respect," I'm immediately in the basement lunchroom of our elementary school (actually the church basement) having a conversation about that song with Anthony Morris and Amber Vault and explaining why I preferred "I Just Wanna Testify" by Parliament (young George Clinton), and of course hearing that song takes me back, too.
What an amazing idea to annotate a beloved book in order to give both the story and your insights to a friend! That is a labor of love for sure. Thanks for sharing!
Well, what a surprise. Faith Cohen and Barb Shoup love music. I strongly relate to the idea that a song can open up a world of memory. For sure. Thanks again, Barb.
Beautifully written and so true … though I’m an ocean away, one line from one song can take me back in time an place … Love the quote you end with !!!
I love that quote, too.
